Assistant Systems Engineer - Job Description

Under general supervision, it assists in the analysis, planning, implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and enhancement of large complex systems or networks consisting of a combination that may include servers, mainframes, mini-computers, LANs, WANs. Fabrics, storage arrays, and physical and logical components that integrate these systems together as a backbone or corporate network platform.

1041 The associate system engineer means is the entry-level of the Engineer series. The class differs from the travel level by the complexity of the supported systems or networks. Placements at this level do a significant portion of the work assigned to the trip level, but without the expected independence or full responsibility for the trip level positions. Tasks generally have a limited scope and are defined in procedural frameworks established by higher level positions. As experience grows, the incumbent operator acts with increasing independence. This task requires historians to make some decisions when choosing the specific guidelines to follow. Important errors must be recognized in the future. Interpreting common rules for governing or working is sometimes necessary. Serves as an assistant in designing and integrating a system into large networks or complex systems.
Essential Duties
1.      Assists in providing day-to-day operational support for server, storage or network infrastructures.
2.      Builds, patches, tests (check for compatibility issues, conducts QA) and deploys systems and platforms meeting clients’ needs and specifications.
3.      Implements changes to infrastructure with the goal of enhancing performance.
4.      Assists with storage and server data backup, data migration and disaster recovery operations.
5.      Assists with software and operating system upgrades and track system licensing.
6.      Assists with configuring security settings or access permissions for groups and individuals.
7.      Provides technical support (help desk) to users by troubleshooting problems related to network or platform performance.
8.      Documents procedures and troubleshooting procedures related to systems/networks software and hardware.
9.      Maintains office and/or production software, adjunct support and/or utility software, i.e. Virus malware protection, office application suites and/or application software.
